Songs and Sonatas
Our next concert will be 'Songs and Sonatas', hosted by local composer and pianist, Tony Bridgewater, violinist Anna Downes, and her sister, soprano Paula Downes.
They will be performing two compositions by Andrew Downes, the Violin Sonata and his song-cycle 'Celtic Rhapsody'. Andrew, father of Anna and Paula, was Professor of Composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. BBC Radio 3 has said his music contains "Gorgeous writing", while the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, who recently recorded his complete symphonies, said "Andrew Downes ranks today among the internationally acclaimed musical personalities."
The programme will also include 'Snowflakes', a song-cycle to the poetry of Emily Dickinson newly written by Tony for Paula, and Beethoven's majestic Violin Sonata in C minor op.30 no.2.
